When I first realized I had a gray hair at the age of nineteen (my friend Betsy discovered it while she was dying my hair), I freaked out; I’m sure many of you can relate to this experience. Since then, I have found a few other gray hairs, and although they really aren’t that noticeable, I am curious as to what I might be able to do to delay the onset of more gray ones. First of all, what can cause gray hair? Scientific American is hesitant to directly connect stress and gray hair; however, the experts they interviewed concluded that stress may play a role in speeding up the graying process by five to ten years. Genetics definitely play a part in determining what age your hair begins to turn gray. Scientists have also found that the older we get, the more hydrogen peroxide we build up in our hair follicles, and this large amount of hydrogen peroxide “bleaches our hair from within” (http://www.womansday.com/style-beauty/beauty-tips-products/why-does-hair-turn-gray-118871). Stop smoking! Smoking can contribute to gray hair.
So, what are some ideas on how to combat gray hair (other than just covering it up with hair dye)? Traditional Chinese medicine has a theory that you need to improve the quality of your kidneys and blood in order to fight against gray hair; one way to correct kidney and blood problems is to consume wheatgrass. Drinking wheatgrass juice on a consistent basis may actually bring back your original hair color. Para-amino benzoic acid, which is one of the B vitamins, has also been used to restore hair color. I also found an interesting concoction involving gourds and coconut oil that is supposed to trigger melanin production if you put it on your hair (melanin is what causes your hair to be its natural color).
